The next time you are staring out of your window wishing desperately that spring would magically appear, take note of how your garden looks in winter. Make use of what it is showing you, the skeleton that lies beneath all that razzle dazzle that comes into focus and drapes it in summer. It is another way to take stock of what is working and what could be enhanced. And as long as you are not resting your eyes upon a snow covered garden you can also identify the textures that exist, and whether the space could benefit from some more definition. Take it all in, improve upon it during the upcoming warm weather months, and next year enjoy an even more lovely setting when the snow does fall and rest upon it.

This is how it goes, I tell each of my children what the budget is for the items they are interested in, or need. They then do all of the online legwork, and are motivated to find the best price going, as the less they spend on each item the more they have left for more clothes. I then make the purchase, which ensures that no one goes over budget, and at the end of every month we sit down and review the accounting.

I have to tell you it is working like a dream, and it leaves me time to do things online I want to, like read here on how to get great deals on used furniture, or browse new beauty tips with the time that would have gone into doing this work myself. It is working so well that I am considering the possibility of writing a book about it.

As you know from former posts, I have been a proponent of buying good quality tools, so I will not be needing any of those, unless something unforeseeable happens on that front.  But I am interested in purchasing a new lawnmower. Therefore, I will begin my review of the products available and then follow through.

I will of course post my findings, and no for once I do not already have a winner in mind. So should be interesting to see what others have to say about what’s available. I also think I will outline the differences that lie in buying a petrol mower versus an electric one.

Also, I will identify the best warranties going. In the past those have proven truly valuable to me, so I never disregard them. Oh yeah and, maybe just a bit on those automatic robot lawn mowers. They do intrigue me so.

I recall her sitting on the floor with fabric books all strewn about around her. In each were strips of ruled paper she had torn to make placeholders for the samples she was considering. Those books were picked up, and laid out again, at least fifteen times over the course of several months. She just could not make a final decision because she could not visualize precisely how they would look. She was uncomfortable relying on her imagination to conjure up how the fabrics would look as completed curtains hanging up.

Also, I have a vague memory of the interior designer calling up to urge my mother to make her selection, and this becoming the bane of her existence. My father could not understand what the problem was, considering the designer came so highly recommended, and her services were offered at an astronomical price. In the end, I do not believe my mom liked all of those she ultimately selected.

Now, we have access to images online of all ready made curtains hanging on rods in actual rooms. This allows us the opportunity to see what they look like when in place. No more guessing, or hoping for the best. It is even possible to tell if they will be sheer enough, or vice versa if they will block out enough.

While I must admit that I would like someone else to physically hang my new curtains, since I am completely capable of the task, I will begrudgingly do it. Plus, considering the tremendous ease with which I am able to choose curtains today, and the memory of the strife it caused for my mom back in the day, I clearly have it easier. If I had to go through the hoops that she did I probably would never even get curtains.

With the advent of Internet shopping, convenience came to the forefront. Now, you can easily access things like measurements and colour choices at the touch of a few buttons. No more running around jotting such details down, along with prices and delivery information. Once you are well informed you can pop around to an actual brick and mortar shop and see things up close and personal.

Another very practical change is that you can now exchange the sofa for a reasonable fee if it is not right for you. Before, the standard policy was once it was ordered it was a done deal. The thought of being tied to what could be potentially such an expensive mistake, should you choose unwisely was nerve wracking to say the least.

All these improvements leave you with more time to locate the other furniture you require for your new home. In the time it would have taken to find your spot-on couch before, now you can have it and all the outdoor furniture you need too lined up. Ah, now that’s progress.

First things first, look at your kitchen counters and assess what is taking up your premium territory. Do you have containers with fruit, or veg in them? If so, they are bound for new homes. Place that fruit bowl in the center of your kitchen table, it not only will be off the counter, but we bet more of it will get eaten. It will be viewed more frequently, and in the case of fruit, well absence (aka -out of direct view) does not make the heart grow fonder. Get yourself a hanging three tiered basket, and place the veggies in it.

Are you staring at a big old block of knives? Say goodbye to the space hog, and hello to a magnetized wall strip. Not only have you reclaimed room, but this will make you look like a serious cook too. Please note this may not be suitable if there are young children around.

There are as many different types of paving stones as there are types of stone. Outdoor paving stones vary in size, shape and materials.

The most important factor is whether your stones are calibrated or riven.

- calibrated paving stones have been worked so that they have a similar thickness. This allows you to use screed bedding or individual bedding methods. They can be more expensive than riven stones.
- riven paving stones and reclaimed paving stones can show considerable variation in thickness. They require the individual bedding method outlined below.

What Tools and Materials Do I Need?

- Paving stones
- Bedding material (mortar)
- Rubber mallet
- String
- Wooden stakes
- Measuring tape
- Pen and paper
- 10mm spacers

How Do I Measure?

First draw out a rough sketch of the area to be paved. Experiment with different designs until you find one your are happy with. Using string and wooden stakes, mark out the design in the area to be paved. Adjust the string until you are satisfied, then measure the area you have bounded by string and note the measurements on a drawn plan.

How Do I Lay Paving Stones?

Remember:
- To achieve a symmetrical flow, begin in the centre of your design and work outwards.
- your paving should have a fall of 1:80 to aid drainage. i.e. there should be a fall of 1cm vertically for every 80cm you pave horizontally.
1. Prepare the ground by digging out soil to a depth of (thickness of your paving stones)+(25mm)
2. Spread mortar about 35mm thick over an area about 100mm larger than your paving stone.
3. Lay the paving stone down on top of the mortar.
4. Tap the paving stone with the rubber mallet until it is flush with the ground.
5. Put pressure on the edges of the slab to see if it rocks. If so, fill gaps with mortar.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 with your other slabs, separating each slab with 10mm spacers.
7. Allow the mortar to dry for 48 hours.
8. Mix three parts sand with one part cement to form dry mortar.
9. Remove the spacers and brush the dry mortar into the gaps between the paving stones.
10. Pack the dry mortar down with a trowel.
Repeat steps 9-10 at least 4 times.
11. Brush away excess mortar.
12. Spray the surface of the paving stones with water to activate the mortar.
13. Allow to dry for 48 hours.

For the living room, you can find a number of striking funky chairs, chic and comfortable allowing you to relax after a long hard day of work. You can find retro style egg chairs that will make jaws drop, showcasing gloss ABS resin shells and sumptuously padded interiors, alongside Bauhaus inspired items with chromed frames and ergonomically formed seats that cosset your body. But back to the gist of this story, since having upgraded to a new garden shed, I have become more aware of how much we have. Though the new shed is nearly double the size of the old one, the new one is nearly completely full already. As I was moving the tools, and materials out of the former shed I began to keep a tally of the value of it all. Surprisingly, it is well worth having it covered under the insurance policy.

You know how you acquire garden supplies and equipment over the years, but rarely ever see it all strewn across the grass. Well, I saw absolutely everything in the light of day right before it was placed into the new shed. So, I am recommending that everyone take a count of what they have stored in their garden shed, or sheds and what is in the garden itself also. Chances are you’ve got stuff in there you have forgotten all about, but is of value. Then, check to see if your contents insurance for your house covers it, or not.

Just like it is critical that you have an accurate account of the belongings you have inside the house, it is outside too. Therefore, you definitely should write down what you have in both places. Ok, stop groaning now, I know it does not sound like the highlight of your weekend, but god forbid something happen, you will be thanking your lucky starts you did it. Think of it this way, either you will be paying for that coverage, or it comes as part of the coverage in a package. Either way you do not want to lose out because you do not have a clue, much less a written record of what was once there and would still be had it not been for the untoward event.

Make the area a place for all to gather, by furnishing it with plenty of cushy seating, and lots of tabletop space for activities and projects. Also, do not overlook the power of living room lighting. Create a space that emanates comfort, warmth and socialization and members of your brood will be more inclined to go to it instead of hiding away in their individual bedrooms, solitary.

Take steps such as these to promote both young and old alike to gravitate to this room after meals are finished, and chores completed. The arrangement of the furniture and lighting can be the factor that makes the living room the place where everyone comes together to participate in hobbies, snack, read, watch films and relax. You may stumble upon that illusive thing called family time.
