Bunk Bed Safety
Bunk beds are a great way of utilising space in a bedroom, in particular children’s rooms. Not only do they provide two beds whilst only taking up the floor space of one, they also provide a slightly more exciting experience for children as they climb up the ladder to the top bunk.
However, although you may immediately think that bunk beds are perfect for your children, be aware that at times they can also be dangerous. You should be entirely sure that your child can behave carefully and responsibly if given the opportunity to sleep in a bunk bed, and impress on them that messing about is not an option.
The height of the top bunk on a bunk bed differs from model to model. Younger children will be best with lower bunks, although be sure that the child sleeping in the bunk on the bottom has enough room. Should they sit up in bed at night, you don’t want them to bump their head on the bottom of the top bunk and hurt themselves. Bunk bed manufacturers recommend that the top bunk of a bunk bed is not used by anyone under the age of six, but even children above this age should be monitored carefully during their first few nights sleeping in the bed.
You may wish to choose a bunk bed with high rails around the side, which prevent, or at least reduce, the chances of children falling out if they shift around in their sleep. The method of climbing up to the top bunk should also be considered – some have very substantial ladders, whilst others are a bit flimsy and designed for older children who can easily clamber up. Before buying a bunk bed, carefully consider the ages of the children who will be using it and make sure to familiarise yourself with any safety instructions provided.
